Excerpt from letter issued by Government of Maharashtra
The Institute of Management Development and Research, Pune 411 004 was established as a constituent unit of the Deccan Education Society in May, 1974. The University of Poona by its letter dated May 31, 1974 granted affiliation to the IMDR for conducting (1) Master of Business Administration, (2) Diploma in Business Management leading to Master of Management Studies and (3) Post-Graduate Research in Management under the standard terms and conditions of affiliation. Accordingly the Institute conducted the above-mentioned courses till June 1977.
Thereafter the Institute voluntarily delinked itself from the University of Poona and started conducting its own full-time and part-time courses in management. The same autonomous programmes are being conducted since 1977. The Government of Maharashtra by its letter No. RCI/1286/5793/7-A dated 3rd March 1987 granted recognition to the Institute as a research institution on no grant basis.
The two-year full-time PGDM programme is considered equivalent to the full-time MBA programme conducted by Universities, by the industry for the purpose of recruitment. The Institute is equipped with its own Library, Computer Centre, Conference Hall and Auditorium.

Admissions to the full-time courses are given to graduates (with 12+3 years of education) through an Entrance Test, followed by Group Work and Personal Interview. The Education Testing Service of US recognizes the Institute for Graduate Studies in Business Management and sends the GMAT scores of applicants to the Institute. The Indian Institutes of Management have granted affiliation to the Institute for the purpose of their Common Admission Test of graduate programmes in Management. The Institute is ranked in the top 50 management institutions out of 750 in the country by several ranking agencies. At present, there are 200 students in full-time courses and an equal number in part-time courses.
