The river is polluted with untreated domestic sewage and industrial
effluents from more than 3,500 industrial units. As per research
conducted by various institutes, 40 million liters a day (MLD) of
untreated effluents are being discharged into the rivers. While the city
generates 277 MLD of effluents, the corporation at present can treat

only 210 MLD. The level of dissolved oxygen at various places near
the river is virtually negligible, threatening aquatic life. The situation
been has worsened by the unchecked growth of water hyacinth,

which blocks out sunlight from penetrating the water.
