About Us
Deccan Educa on Society (DES), Pune
was established in 1884 and registered
on 13th August 1885 by four patrio c
visionaries- Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar,
Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh
Agarkar and Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi -
who were already recognized as the
pioneers of new educa on in India. DES
established IMDR in 1974 as a cons tuent unit. It took over the MBA programme of the Pune University -
Centre for MBA and the Diploma in Business Management (run in BMCC, a sister ins tute, since 1968).
Affiliated to Pune University, IMDR was also a recognized centre for research leading to Ph.D. In 1977,
IMDR became an autonomous ins tute by delinking itself from the University of Pune. The ra onale of
this step was stated in these words "To make our teaching programmes, methods of teaching and
examina on more comprehensive, more flexible and more result oriented." In 2011, IMDR got approved
by All India Council of Technical Educa on (AICTE) New Delhi & recognized by Directorate of Technical
Educa on (DTE) Maharashtra.
About the Conference
Around the world, in all countries, small and medium sized businesses play a vital role in the accelera on
and sustenance of a thriving economy. They increase job opportuni es, drive economic growth, and
create wealth. This is why economic policy is designed to boost small and medium enterprises and
governments aspire to create ecosystems that promote entrepreneurial skills through formal educa on
and upskilling programs. While these efforts help businesses to set up opera ons, their journey exposes
them to myriad challenges. Their quest towards survival and growth requires them to constantly adopt
new techniques and adapt to the dynamics of business environment. The Na onal Conference on,
“Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in India - Challenges, Growth Opportuni es and Ease of Doing
Business” is inten oned to provide an academic pla orm to students, aspiring and exis ng
entrepreneurs, academicians, researchers, policy makers and industry experts to discuss and
understand exis ng challenges faced by SMEs and their growth strategies to exploit emergent
opportuni es.

Explore and understand the way forward for SMEs in general, as well as iden fy specific issues faced by
them to figure out enduring solu ons in the future.
