it comes to ensuring water security. The economic (World Bank,
2016; World Economic Forum, 2016), security (US Intelligence
Community, 2012), social (Zeitoun et al., 2016), engineering (Royal
Academy of Engineering, 2010), and environmental components of
this dilemma have all been previously examined by commentators.
Rivers, lakes, wetlands, and aquifers are the main sources of water
for human use, along with direct rainfall. In addition to providing
numerous other environmental functions, rivers and related wetlands
have intrinsic value for many civilizations.
