Page 166 - Swatantrata to Atmanirbharta : Lokmanya Tilak’s legacy
P. 166
He was a political activist, who brought together the masses for
sustained political action. His dynamism, pace, and futuristic
action-oriented ways were praised by many.
Tilak had the power to use his pen like a sword and was also
an excellent orator. His knowledge of the scriptures combined
with his education and analytical abilities led to the struggle for
free India. He initiated what can be called a bloodless revolution
with the help of his powerful writing and oratory. His idea of
Lok Sangraha, that is, uniting the people was put forth very well.
Tilaks writings show both realism and well blended idealistic
philosophy.
Tilak breathed his last on the 1st August, 1920. Exactly a
century after he passed away, it would be wonderful to remember
him with what Gandhiji had to say on that day. (Gandhiji 1920)
“A giant among men has fallen. The voice of the lion is hushed.
His patriotism was a passion with him. He knew no religion, but
love of his country. He was a born Democrat, and had an iron
will which he used for his country. His life was an open book.
His tastes were simple. His private life was spotlessly clean. No
man preached the gospel of Swaraj with the consistency and
insistence of Lokmanya!”.
