consideration while calculating the Global Peace Index. The United States
alone accounts for 40% of the military expenditure even though it has
been reducing its military spending by 11% since 2011. On average, the
military expenditure has fallen as a percentage of GDP, but it has risen on
the per capita basis. In 2008, the total global military spending was 1.573
trillion and from there it mounted to 1.774 trillion (constant $US 2017
dollars) which is an increase of 12.9% (Fig 3) but military expenditure as
a percentage of GDP has reduced in 98 countries.
As stated by a 2019 report the domain of ‘Militarization’ has seen an
improvement of 2.6 per cent since 2008. This indicates a reduction in
military expenditure by countries around the world. After the US, China
has the second-largest position in military expenditure which has gone
along with the country’s economic growth. The country has shown an

increase in military expenditure of 5.6 per cent since the year 2016.
Military expenditure is very varied from 42% in North America and
Asia-Pacific to just 4% in Central America and the Caribbean.
