SDGs & ROLE OF INDUSTRIES:
The SDGs are the proposal & plan to achieve a better and more sustainable future for the mankind. These
goals address the global challenges that the world at large is facing i.e., poverty, inequality, climate change,
environmental degradation, peace and justice. The Industries around the world have their moral values to
support societal development. One of the best ways for Industries to support the Mankind is the avenue for
employment. The Industries create opportunities for work, which in turn create opportunity for the people to
sustain their needs and enjoy their living. Straightaway when we link the responsibility of Industries one can
understand that job creation and generating income leads to poverty eradication and addressing other
development goals, as well as providing opportunities for social inclusion, including gender equality,
empowering women and girls and creating decent employment for the youth.
Sustainable Development as defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED)
is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs”. The Sustainable industries are those that are potentially non-polluting &
environmentally conscious establishment. Sustainable industries tend to be intrinsically more labour
intensive and less resource intensive than traditional processes.
Among the features of sustainable industry major inclusions are energy efficiency, resource conservation to
meet the needs of society at large. The Industries have the onus to develop and implement improved
processes to reduce, reuse and recycle water, raw materials, non-renewable minerals, other inputs, by-
products and waste. The Sustainable development for the Industries can be achieved through protection of
the natural environment, choice of non-toxic materials, reduction and reuse of resources, waste
minimization, and the use of life-cycle cost analysis. The Industrial sustainability actually refers to concerns
& efforts towards four distinct areas i.e., human, social, economic and environmental – known as the four
pillars of sustainability. The path towards fulfilling the needs of these four pillars leads to the sustainability
of the Industries and eventually contributing to the SDGs as well.
