1. Introduction
A vibrant tapestry of cultures and artistic marvels defines India. Among these treasures, the Kolhapuri chappal
stands out as a symbol of not just function, but heritage and tradition. Crafted with meticulous precision and
intricate detail, these traditional sandals whisper stories of India's past, earning them a well-deserved
Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2019. This recognition, spanning across eight districts in Maharashtra and
Karnataka, signifies the unique association of the chappal with its place of origin, safeguarding its legacy.
Beyond the GI tag, Kolhapuri chappals represent a deeper significance. They are an embodiment of cultural
identity, weaving a thread between generations and connecting wearers to their roots. Durable enough for
farmers traversing rugged terrain, yet stylish enough for royalty, these sandals transcended social barriers,
uniting individuals across the spectrum. But as India marches towards the ambitious vision of Viksit Bharat
2047, the tapestry takes on a new dimension. This ambitious vision paints a picture of an India brimming with
inclusivity, cultural preservation, and sustainable growth. It beckons us to explore every thread of its diverse
heritage, seeking its potential to contribute to this brighter future. That's where the Kolhapuri chappal steps
onto the stage.
Statement of Problem:
As Viksit Bharat 2047 envisions a thriving and inclusive India, cultural marvels like Kolhapuri chappals can
contribute in various ways. They can empower rural communities by generating employment and reviving

Objectives:
1. Assessing the Socio-Economic Potential of Kolhapuri Chappals in Achieving the Goals of Viksit Bharat
2047.
2. Examine the Kolhapuri chappal industry's capacity to strengthen artisan communities in rural areas and
generate sustainable livelihoods.

mass-produced alternatives and limited market access, particularly in international markets.
Scope:
This research transcends the mere study of Kolhapuri chappals, delving into their potential as a catalyst for
achieving specific goals enshrined in Viksit Bharat 2047. Our dual focus centres on "Weaving Prosperity":
carefully examining how the industry can combat poverty through rural employment, artisan empowerment,
and sustainable livelihoods, acknowledging challenges like fair wages and market access. The other focus,
"Preserving Identity," explores the chappals' role in safeguarding cultural heritage, their ability to connect
