Preface

                     Editing the commemorative volume on
Lokmanya Tilak was a memorable experience
for us. Working on the book was an immersive
experience and we feel greatly enriched to learn
about this great Leader, Educationist, Journalist,
                   Philosopher and Son of India.
The idea of publishing a book on Lokmanya
Tilak’s death centenary was proposed by Shri.
                   Mahesh Athavale, Vice Chairman, Governing
Body and Council, Deccan Education Society,
                   Pune and Chairman, Local Management
                   Committee, IMDR Pune.

More than a hundred years ago, Lokmanya
Tilak declared: “Swaraj is my birthright”. Towards
this objective of Swatantrata he championed
the causes of Swadeshi, Nationalist Education,
Social Reform and mobilised the masses socially
                   and culturally through community festivals.
Today, as we come full circle from Swatantrata to
Atmanirbharta, it is an opportune time to revisit
and interpret the thoughts and ideals of Lokmanya
                   in the present context.

Lokmanya Tilak was truly a mass leader with an
appeal across demographics. Therefore, when we
conceived the book, we invited contributions from
                   people belonging different professions.
We are happy that the book has contributors
from professions as diverse as law, medicine,
                   armed forces, company secretary, management,
                   and academics.
We hope that the readers will like the contents
                   in the book.
