Page 71 - Swatantrata to Atmanirbharta : Lokmanya Tilak’s legacy
P. 71
Tilak revealed that there are many types of freedom such as
economic freedom, freedom of expression, writing, etc. But the
main demand of the national movement started by the Indian
leaders was to obtain political freedom from the British rulers.
Therefore, two important issues of Agricultural Education
and Industry Education were begin neglected by both the
government and our leaders.
Tilak does not find any fault on the part of leaders as they
obviously give preference to political rights to win the public
confidence and become popular.
4.2 Correlation Between Agricultural and Industrial
Education
There is a mutual correlation between the agricultural
education and industry education. Agricultural education
teaches how to take maximum and quality production on the
available area of land while the main aim of Industry education
is to increase the number of industries in the country to reduce
the population dependent on agriculture.
Tilak wrote that both types of education and training should
be made available to the lower- and middle-class people in the
society. He added that the government may deny the demand
for political freedom, but it cannot reject the demand for the
provision of agricultural education and industry education.
4.3 No Mention of Training in Curriculum
Tilak informed that the formal education system was started
fifty years ago in our country, however, there was not a single
mention about the agricultural education and industry education
in the school curriculum. Tilak indicated it as a big mistake of
the government.
4.4 Marginal Landholdings
Majority of farmers in our country have very small size pieces
of land available for the cultivation. Therefore, it becomes quite
important to provide training to the farmers, about the methods
of cultivation in small pieces of land, how to take more income
from it and earn their livelihood.
