Literature Review
The Indian Railway system, with its vast network of tracks and stations connecting all corners of the
country, has played a critical role in the country's economic development. Railway transportation has
grown in importance, accounting for a significant portion of freight transportation in the country.
This literature review aims to provide an overview of the Indian Railway Cargo system, focusing on
its development, challenges, and opportunities. From 704 million tonnes in 2010-11 to 1,210 million
tonnes in 2019-20, the volume of freight transported by the Indian Railway Cargo system has
increased significantly over the years (Ministry of Railways, 2020). Growth has been fueled by
factors such as railway network expansion, infrastructure modernization, and the introduction of new
technologies.
The Indian Railway Cargo system has witnessed significant growth over the years, driven by the
expansion of the railway network and modernization of infrastructure. However, the system faces
several challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and operational inefficiencies. Despite these
challenges, there are opportunities for the system to grow and improve, particularly with the
increasing demand for rail transportation and the government's initiatives to promote domestic
manufacturing and exports
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the contribution of railways to cargo transportation
To understand the initiatives taken by the government to promote rail freight
To get an insight into the growing need for improvement of rail cargo
To better understand our overreliance on roadways for cargo transport
Exploratory research is research that looks at a problem that isn't well-defined. It is carried out to
gain a deeper comprehension of the current issue, but it won't produce definitive findings. A
researcher begins such research with a broad concept and utilizes it as a tool to pinpoint problems
that could serve as the subject of additional study. The researcher must be open to altering courses
in response to the discovery of fresh information or insight.
As information is already available on the topic, we gathered information from various sources on
the internet. Further, we have interpreted the available information and applied our understanding
to the report.
We are completely relying on secondary data for the project which includes Literature from
articles published in Newspapers & Magazines, journals about Railways, Websites, and articles
released by the government regarding new policies
