Evolution of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)

A Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) is a collective of farmers
who pool their resources, both human and capital, to collectively

engage in farming activities. These organizations aim to enhance the
socio-economic well-being of their member farmers by promoting
sustainable agricultural practices, improving market access, and
ensuring fair prices for their produce. FPOs operate as registered
entities and are typically governed by a board of elected farmer

members.

The Rise of FPOs in India

The concept of FPOs gained momentum in India as a means to

empower small and marginal farmers. These organizations received
significant attention and support from the government, non-
governmental organizations (NGOs), and international agencies.
The formation of FPOs was seen as a transformative approach to
addressing the various challenges faced by Indian farmers, including

those related to millet production.
