The main types of millet exported from India are pearl millet,
sorghum, and finger millet. Pearl millet is the most exported variety,
accounting for more than 50% of the total millet exports. The major
destinations for pearl millet exports are the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and
Kuwait. Sorghum is the second most exported variety, accounting
for around 30% of the total millet exports. The major destinations for
sorghum exports are China, Taiwan, and Japan. Finger millet is the
third most exported variety, accounting for around 15% of the total
millet exports. The major destinations for finger millet exports are
the USA, Canada, and the UK.

The export of millet from India has been increasing steadily in recent
years, owing to the growing demand for healthy and nutritious food
products. The government of India has also been promoting the
export of millet by providing various incentives and subsidies to
millet farmers and exporters. However, the export of millets is still
largely unorganized, with most of the exports taking place through
informal channels. The government is taking steps to promote
the formalization of millet exports and improve the quality and
standardization of millet products to increase their acceptability in
        the global market.

        Export Potential of Millets
According to projections, India is expected to have a surplus of 0.56
million MT of millets by the year 2030, which could potentially
be exported as millet and millet-based value-added products worth
USD 2 billion. India can focus on value-added millet products such
as millet flour, biscuits, noodles, puffs, extruded snacks, RTE mixes,
millet malt, and beverages. In 2021, India ranked 7th globally in
millet exports in terms of value and 10th in terms of volume, with
exports worth USD 65.10 million and export quantity of 1.68 Lakh
        MT, respectively.

The global malt-based ingredients market, for instance, is worth
nearly USD 30 billion, and millet malt can be a good substitute,
backed with further product development and aggressive marketing.
Similarly, targeting products such as healthy millet pasta has the
potential to yield up to USD 270 million worth of exports from India
