        Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and
        Odisha.

        The government of India has launched several initiatives to promote
        millet  production, including the National  Food Security Mission
        (NFSM) and the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).  NGOs and
        private companies like the Millet Network of India (MINI) and the
        Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) have also contributed
        to  this  cause.  These  organizations  are  working  to  improve  millet
        production, increase awareness about the health benefits of millet,
        and develop new millet-based products that can appeal to modern
        consumers.

        Production of Millets

        India’s contribution  to global  millet  production  has remained
        consistent, with an average of 17% between the years 2012 and 2022,
        increasing marginally to 19% in 2022. In 2020-21, Rajasthan went on
        to become the largest producer of millets in India, with a production
        of 5.15 million metric tons that contributed 28.61% to the national
        production.

        The top 6 millet-producing  states collectively  contributed more
        than 80% of India’s total millet production in the year 2020-21. The
        figures  given  below  provide  a  graphical  representation  of  India’s
        contribution to the total global millet production, the top 6 Indian
        states in terms of millet production, and the top 6 states in terms of
        the area under millet cultivation during 2020-21.
