In the first lecture of the session 1 of the Impact Lecture Series, Adv. Paresh Chinchole started the event by speaking on the topic ‘Protection of Intellectual Property Rights and its significance in development of business’. He spoke at length about various Intellectual Property Rights including Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks, and Industrial Designs. He then went on to explain the patentable and non-patentable rights in India and threw light on the characteristics of patents. He mentioned the various kinds of trademarks which included Word marks, Design Marks, Composite Marks, and Slogans while also giving examples of each. He made the session more engaging by giving examples pf trademark including products like Little Hearts and Appy Fizz. Students were introduced to the concept of Sound Mark by using the example of Hero Motors’ advertisement where the company showcases the sound of a bike. He also explained the value of a trademark and described it as a valuable business asset. Further, he mentioned the top 10 most valuable brands of 2020 and how these brands used their trademark to reach this position. He made sure that the students understood what to avoid while selecting a trademark and what to remember while coining one. Also, he demonstrated the trademark filing procedure. Furthermore, while speaking about copyrights, he explained how copyright can be applied to any original work of authorship that are fixed in any tangible medium of expression. He then elucidated the subject matter of copyright and originality. He also spoke at length about what can and cannot be copyrighted and the exceptions to copyright infringement. Later, while explaining the concept of Industrial Designs and how it can prove to be a successful marketing strategy, he illustrated a case study of the prescription drug Prilosec manufactured by AstraZeneca, commonly known as the Purple Pill. He ended his talk by stating one of the 10 Commandments of the Jewish Torah, ‘Thou Shall Not Steal’, but with a unique twist where there was an asterisk that said, ‘includes intellectual property’.
At the end of the lecture 1 of the session 1, students and faculty members asked questions which were answered by Adv. Chinchole.

Mr. Parag Chinchole is a lawyer with a technical/scientific background and has a 7 plus years of experience in Intellectual Property Rights Prosecution. After completing M.Sc. Biotechnology from University of Pune(MS, India), he joined Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur to study LL.B.(Honors in IPR ). He has extensively and independently handled Patent filing and prosecution; Copyright filing & prosecution; Trademark filing (domestic & International ) & prosecution including violation and counterfeiting matters with regard to trademarks. He has worked on 24 geographical indication applications belonging majorly to agricultural sector. I am proud to be associated with many start ups as their legal and IP consultant. He is an enthusiast when it comes to due diligence activities related to intellectual property & technology transfer. His focus is on conducting prior art searches for inventors and holding discussions with inventors on various intellectual property matters, drafting commercial & transactional agreements for business. He also advises on matters related to trademark, industrial designs.
